An unknown man, believed to be izinyoka, was found dead on Thursday 7 December.
It is believed the man was electrocuted while trying to steal cables at Gwayi Street in Crossroads. He was discovered by a bypasser in the morning.
Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said Nyanga officers registered an inquest for investigation after the body of a man believed to be in his 30s was discovered in Gwayi Street.
“According to reports, the victim was busy cutting cables when he was electrocuted. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” said Twigg.
Nceba Ntshweza, Ward 36 councillor, described cable theft as one of the major challenges in the neighbourhood. He said many people are suffering because of the thieves. “It is sad to lose a family member the way the deceased died. We feel sorry for his family because we are off the view that his family didn’t ask him to do that,” said Ntshweza, adding that the deceased was unknown in the community.
He urged the community to report suspicious actions to the police. “It is the first time such an incident has happened in the area. People must stop stealing cables or hiring unqualified electricians to fix their electricity boxes. If they have a problem with anything concerning electricity, they must feel free to come to the office,” he appealed.
