The Nyanga Community Policing Forum is saddened by the shooting and killing of an officer at Eyadini informal settlement in Nyanga on Sunday 23 July, during which a woman was injured.

The forum requested the government take decisive actions against the perpetrators.

The motive for the incident is unknown.

According to Nyanga CPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe, the perpetrators have no respect for the state.

“Perpetrators are sending a clear message that they don’t care about the state and they are directly attacking the state,” he said. “The government needs to stop the killing of law enforcement officers. The state must leave no stone unturned in bringing perpetrators to book. We want the culprits to be brought to book.”

Qwebe added that the deceased was an off-duty officer stationed at Nyanga Police Station.

The irate CPF official said police killings are becoming the norm in the townships.

He urged anyone with information on such incidents to report them to the police station.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said Nyanga officers were investigating murder and attempted cases following a shooting incident on Sunday at about 18:15, at Brown’s Farm, in which a 32-year-old off-duty police officer was shot and fatally wounded and an adult female shot and wounded.

“According to reports, the victims were sitting in the vehicle when they were approached by unknown gunmen and an argument ensued,” he said. “The 32-year-old victim sustained a gunshot wound to his head and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the female sustained a gunshot wound to her arm and was taken to a medical facility for treatment.”

Twigg said the circumstances surrounding the incident were the subject of a police investigation. He said the suspects fled the scene and were yet to be arrested.

Twigg said the case was being investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) (Hawks).
