As voters, we need to ask ourselves serious questions about political organisations in our country.
Are they really representing us or are they just there to feed individuals within?
During the last national elections, we had more than 30 registered political organisations that contested, some of whom I had never heard of.
I asked myself if the leaders of these organisations genuinely have an interest in fighting for the poor.
Why can’t they form one big organisation that will compete against the ruling party?
The newly formed ‘Multiparty Charter for South Africa’ is a good example of this, as it encompasses many political parties.
We need one voice that will represent all our interest.
Having a common goal is another thing. The real question is do those leaders, in that pact, trust each other?
Because that Multiparty Charter is nothing without trust. We are patiently waiting to see if the pact will work.
We all know that there are organisations who are in parliament to add up the numbers and not to make any changes in society.
Last week, the former African National Congress secretary Ace Magashula launched his political party African Congress for Transformation (ACT) on top of all the existing organisations.
And you ask yourself who is going to support him? This is someone who was expelled from the ANC on charges that are related to corruption.
Where does he think he will get the votes? However, who am I to judge him?
Another good example is our councillors. Some of them are in the council not because they are community driven but because they want money. The energy that they have when they campaign fades away once they get into the office.
Some councillors are struggling even to respond to WhatsApp or email messages. As voters, we need to open our eyes and realise that these leaders are not there to help us but to enrich themselves. There are many political organisations that I can’t mention with names but you can see that they are dead, yet their leaders try so hard to be relevant.
We don’t need many organisations, all we need are dedicated men and women who can take this country forward.
