Samora Machel police officers are investigating a murder and attempted murder case after a taxi owner was shot and killed on Friday 25 February at Kosovo informal settlement.

The motive is unknown.

Samora Machel Community Policing Forum spokesperson Bongani Maqungwana said they are shocked by the incident. He called for the law to take its course.

“It is reported that the deceased is the owner of amaphela (small sedan taxi operating locally).

“He was driving his private car when he was killed,” he said.

Maqungwana said the deceased was with three other occupants in the vehicle during the shooting.

However, he stated that they are not aware of any fight in the taxi industry.

“We don’t know whether it was an act of crime or a taxi related violence. But we are hoping that the police won’t leave any stone unturned,” he said.

He appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

Samora Machel Police Station spokesperson Capt Thembisile Senaya confirmed the incident saying that a murder and attempted murder cases were opened.

“The incident happened at about eight in the morning. The deceased was ferrying three securing officers to work. Only one security officer was injured and is hospitalised and the other two left unharmed. The driver was shot twice in the head and died on the scene,” said Senaya adding that no arrest has been made yet.
