At least 13 taxis, four sprinter buses and a car burned at Nyanga taxi rank

Taxi association SANTACO Western Cape (WC) condemned in the strongest terms the torching of taxis at the Nyanga terminus on Sunday 9 February.

In a statement released on Monday 10 February it called on all those involved in these actions to find a peaceful resolution so any more damage to property can be averted.

“We, the provincial structure, will request a meeting with the executive of CATA [Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association] to brief us regarding the happenings, where we will be encouraging them to meet with those parties involved to find an amicable solution,” it said.

The association said it was committed to working towards ensuring a peaceful and stable taxi industry that will continue to serve the people of the province.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse confirmed the incident, saying firefighters had been called out to the Nyanga taxi rank at approximately 22:30.

“Multiple vehicles were on fire when crews arrived on the scene. Their efforts to extinguish the blaze were hampered by strong winds, but they finally managed to get the fire out at 23:40. A number of vehicles were destroyed in the incident which include 13 taxis, four sprinter buses and a civilian vehicle.” No injuries were reported, he added.

Carelse stated that the cause of the fire is unknown.
