Lagunya has a big mountain to climb on Saturday when they meet Hamediehs from Athlone for the last time in the Promotion League of Western Province Rugby Union.
Hamediehs and Van der Stel-Evergreens already qualified to play Super League C in 2023 after being in position one and two on the log.
Van der Stel-Evergreens fulfilled their commitments for the year two weeks ago against Atlantis and have a bye.
All eyes will be on the outcome of the matches between Blakes and Sir Lowrians in Stellenbosch and Violets and Northerns in Chukker Road, Lansdowne.
Blakes, Violets and Sir Lowrians all have 19 points on the log and they are all playing to be the fourth team who will take on Masiphumelele next week in the play-off on neutral ground. The winner of the play-off will join Hamediehs and Van der Stel-Evergreens next year in Super League C.
The losers will again compete in 2023 in the zonal section, in the Northerns, Southern or City Leagues.
Violets have a better chance of qualifying for the playoff due to the points difference but with the form Lagunya is currently in you cannot write them off. In their past three matches Lagunya only lost by less than seven points and should not be underestimated.
Hamediehs will make a big mistake if they only pitch up for the match, knowing they already qualified, and may be in for a surprise or two.
Lagunya will field their best 15 on Saturday just to give Hamediehs a run for their money. Hamediehs has 30 points on the log, two less than Van der Stel-Evergreens and a draw is not on their cards. Hamediehs are looking for four points at least to be crowned the Promotion League champion.
Northerns are still looking for their first win in the competition and the match against Violets won’t be a walk in the park. Violets are targeting the play-off against Masiphumelele who surprised all the teams by currently being in position three on the log. The play-off will be played on a neutral ground.
Masiphumelele travels to Atlantis for their match against the home team and will treat this game as a final.
