Women from Gugulethu were ecstatic after receiving free sanitary pads donated by Blossom Care Solution (BCS) on Sunday 26 November at NY91 Stadium in Gugulethu.
Blossom is a local company that manufactures sanitary pads to support needy people in Gugulethu and the surrounding areas.
One of the luckiest people who received two packets of sanitary pads Vuyolwethu Mawa praised the initiative, citing it as helpful to the community.
“I’m glad I won’t buy pads for the next month,” she said. “I have enough pads now. It is difficult for some of us to buy pads especially when we are unemployed. We so wish they can donate them every month.”
BCS business coach Luvuyo Stuurman described their business as new in the area. He said the aim was to support the local community.
“Our business operates at Gugulethu Comprehensive High School premises and they had just one month of operating,” he said. “We work closely with local schools, both primary and secondary. We plan to donate to schools every month. We also sell to other local businesses at bargain prices.”
Stuurman said at primary schools Grade 5 to 7 learners were being targeted, while at high schools all grades were.
“We learned that some learners were missing classes because they didn’t have sanitary pads. We are now trying to break that cycle by ensuring no-one missed school during their periods.”
He added workshops were also being run at schools, in which learners were being educated about hygiene.
