Blaze kills family of four

Four people of the same family, believed to be from Zimbabwe, died in a blaze that occurred in the early hours of Saturday 2 April in Makhaza, Khayelitsha.


Four people of the same family, believed to be from Zimbabwe, died in a blaze that occurred in the early hours of Saturday 2 April in Makhaza, Khayelitsha.

The victims are a 65 year old, a grandmother of children between the ages of four and 12.

Harare police told City Vision they found four charred bodies on the scene.

Harare police spokesperson Capt Siyabulela Vukubi said they are investigating the cause of the inferno.

“Police attended the scene and encountered four chared bodies who were declared dead on the scene. The victims is a 65-year-old together with her grandchildren aged between four and 12,” said Vukubi. He said police have opened an inquest docket.

Spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Service, Jermaine Carelse, confirmed that four persons died in a fire in Makhaza on Saturday morning.

“The City’s Fire & Rescue Service was alerted at 03:40 of a dwelling fire in Lulwane Street, Khayelitsha. Crews from Lansdowne Road, Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain were dispatched to the scene and reported that the fire was extinguished prior to their arrival,” he said.

Carelse said the formal dwelling sustained partial damage, but a search of the property led to the discovery of the four bodies – four females (two infants, a child and an adult).

He said the scene was handed over to the South African Police Service and the cause is unknown at this stage.
