Boxing fanatics in the region will be in for a treat next month when Mzuvukile Magwaca clashes with Bongani Mahlangu at the Mew Way Hall.
There will also be numerous other bouts, including a clash between Ntombokuqala Tolashe and Gudani Mudau.
The Site C-based Magwaca (33) will be challenging Mahlangu (44), from Johannesburg, for the South African Junior Featherweight title over 12 rounds. While Tolashe (27), also from Khayelitsha, will lock horns with Mudau (31), from Thoyandou in Limpopo. The duo will clash for the vacant Female South African Featherweight title over 10 rounds.
Boxing promoter David Faas said it is the time for boxing lovers in Khayelitsha and surrounding areas to witness one of the best boxing tournaments in the community. “It is going to be a humdinger. Boxing lovers must be ready to watch the top-notch boxers locking horns in the ring fighting for national titles on Sunday 26 May,” he explained, adding that those are the main bouts.
Faas described Magwaca and Tolashe as great fighters and cited that their boxing records spoke for themselves.
“Magwaca has 27 fights, won 25 and lost two. His opponent (Mahlangu) has 37 fights, won 26 and lost 10. Tolashe fought 10 fights, won six and lost four. Mudau fought three fights and lost all of them,” he said.
The last time Mew Way held a national title bout was when Mzonke ‘The Rose of Khayelitsha’ Fana fought with Wiseman Jim for SA Junior Lightweight in April 2001, added Faas.
“Now we are trying to bring back boxing in the province, particularly in Khayelitsha. We are appealing to the sponsors to come forward and support the sport. The problem with boxing is that it does not have sponsors like the other sporting codes. We are struggling a lot and it is difficult to promote it,” said Faas, adding that they needed more young people, males and females to join the sport.
Faas said the prices of tickets for the tournament and where people are going to get will be communicated later.
