Police are investigating a shocking robbery incident where a group of thugs targeted Golden Arrow Bus (Gabs) commuters in Khayelitsha.

The incident, which was captured on camera and wildly shared on social media, reportedly happened in Khayelitsha on Friday 7 October.

While questions remain as to how the footage made it into the public domain, the brazen robbery has caused public uproar.

In the footage, one of the thugs can be clearly see going from one seat to another collecting cellphones, cash and other valuables.

While the 1 minute 36 second footage only shows one thug, it is believed he was not acting alone. For the duration of the clip, the thug walks from the front to the back seat collecting different items from visible terrified commuters.

According to Gabs spokesperson, Bronwen Dyke-Beyers, the footage belongs to the company and was shared with the South African Police Service (Saps) for investigation.

“We were very shocked to hear that the footage had been placed on social media as we had shared it with Saps. (It was shared) in order to assist them in fulfilling their constitutional mandate to prevent and investigate crimes and to ensure that perpetrators are apprehended,” she said.

Lingelethu West police spokesperson Xoliswa Nyalambisa said the driver opened a case with the police.

Provincial police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi said the complainant was travelling from Melton Rose to Mitchell’s Plain on Friday 7 October.

“The bus stopped near to an Engen Garage when unknown armed males boarded the bus. The men threatened the driver while the others robbed the passengers of the valuables,” he said.

Swartbooi said the suspects fled with cash they took from the driver.

Lingelethu police are investigating an armed robbery and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111
