Cape Town is set to become the first city in Africa to host the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in 2027.

About 1 200 elite runners from over 80 nations are expected to compete in the championship races from 6 to 10 October 2027, while a limited-entry race will also be open to recreational trail runners.

Competitors will face the technical challenges that have cemented Table Mountain and Lion’s Head’s reputation as a tough but rewarding playground among local and international athletes.

Iconic Table Mountain

“We are so excited for the mountain and trail running world to descend on Cape Town in 2027 for the very first African staging of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships,” said Geordin Hill-Lewis, mayor of Cape Town.

“There is surely no better backdrop to this prestigious event than our very own Wonder of the Natural World, the iconic Table Mountain. But runners should not be fooled by her beauty and her fame – Table Mountain’s rugged trails and steep elevations will pose a stern challenge to elite runners and mass participants alike. I cannot wait to welcome this wonderful event to Cape Town, and to show the world why the Mother City is rightly considered one of the mass participation sports capitals of the world,” Hill-Lewis said.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security of the City of Cape Town, said he is thrilled “to welcome the mother of all races to the Mother City.

“This is very exciting, especially for the special running community Cape Town has nurtured over the years. Our city is right up there as a bucket list destination for runners from across the globe. It offers a blend of breathtaking beauty, world-renowned landmarks, diverse terrains, and perfect weather.

“Running in Cape Town is not just about the scenery though; the Mother City is known for its warm and welcoming spirit, and the World Mountain Trail Running Championship is no exception.

“As a committed supporter of the running community, the City works closely with event organisers and local partners to ensure that every race is safe, well-organised and unforgettable. We look forward to hosting the best runners in the world for the World Mountain Trail Running Championship in 2027.

“The City would also like to thank all the runners and event organisers who have played a vital role in establishing Cape Town as a runner’s dream destination. Crossing the finish line in Cape Town is always a moment to celebrate,” he said.

Joint effort

The successful bid was a joint effort by Golazo South Africa, Athletics South Africa and Western Province Athletics.

Western Province Athletics President Farouk Meyer said securing the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships is a proud milestone for Western Province Athletics.

“It strengthens our commitment to grow all disciplines within athletics and gives trail running a powerful platform to thrive. Partnering with Golazo South Africa allows us to deliver a world-class event that will energise our local athletics community, boost participation, and create a positive ripple effect for Cape Town’s tourism economy. This is more than a race — it’s an opportunity to showcase the depth of talent and passion that exists in our province,” he said.

“We are extremely happy and honoured to have been awarded these championships,” added Bob Verbeeck, chief executive officer of Golazo South Africa.

“It gives us a flying start in South Africa. We will be able to fully leverage our experience with major athletics events such as the Allianz Memorial Van Damme (Diamond League Brussels), the Continental Tour meeting in Nairobi, and most recently the European Running Championships.

“At the same time, we are finalising plans for new running, walking, and cycling events, as well as for supporting existing ones. We will offer participants the opportunity to discover (events in) the Cape region and further promote the area as a paradise for active sports enthusiasts,” he said.

Events merged

The World Mountain Running Championships began in 1985 and was an annual fixture, while 2007 saw the first World Trail Championships. The two events merged in 2021 to become the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships and the event shifted to a biennial format with the first edition held in Chiang Mai, which was postponed by a year. The 2023 edition was held in Innsbruck and Stubai, while this year’s championships took place in Canfranc-Pirineos in Spain in September.

It consists of four senior championship races with individual and team medals awarded in each: classic (up and down), uphill, short trail and long trail. Along with a u-20 championship race, there will also be mass participation and side events, allowing amateur runners to experience the thrill of the event.
