Police officers and forensic personnel examine the charred body.

The discovery of a charred body in Leonard Radu Street, Samora Machel, has left the community reeling.

The body, believed to be of a man, was discovered by residents on Sunday 26 June about 07:00. Circumstances surrounding his torching remain unclear, however some believe he could have been attacked as a form of retaliation.

A resident who prefers to remain anonymous, identifying himself as “Madiba”, said the deceased was spotted by passers-by.

“I saw the body around 07:00. We don’t know what happened, but it looks as if the deceased was necklaced with a tyre.

“We assumed maybe he robbed somewhere and he was caught and killed.”

Madiba said he found it hard to believe nearby residents didn’t hear anything.

“It may have happened that the perpetrators had killed the deceased somewhere but burnt him here, because no-one heard anything,” he said.

Madiba described killings in the area as commonplace. He said, like everyone else he will rely on the police investigation into the causes.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the circumstances surrounding the death of the unknown male in Samora Machel are under investigation.

He said according to reports the victim was found on the road with fatal burn wounds.

“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. A murder case was registered for investigation. The unknown suspect(s) left the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for the murder is yet to be established.”
