Waste collection services in Gugulethu, Philippi East/Lower Crossroads and Nyanga have been reinstated and are expected to resume today (Monday 9 October) under security protection if all goes as planned. This came after the City’s Urban Waste Management employees were robbed and attacked in Lower Crossroads and KTC respectively.

Mayco Member for Urban Waste Management Grant Twigg said services in these areas were temporarily disrupted because refuse-collection staff received threats of attack unless the City paid protection fees.

“The waste-collection services in affected areas have been reinstated under security protection,” he said. “Residents are asked please to be patient as we deal with the backlog. We appreciate their cooperation during this time. On Monday, regularly scheduled services will commence if all goes as planned.”

Twigg said it remained the City’s priority to ensure services continued as much as possible, even in such challenging times.

“We are committed to providing waste-collection services while ensuring the safety of our staff on the ground delivering these very services to communities. We will work closely with safety and security teams to ensure our services can continue.”
