The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted a successful sports carnival at Nyanga Sports Field on Saturday 20 January.

The second sports carnival saw netball and soccer players from the community competing.

Participants also had the opportunity to hone their skills.

Apart from the exciting soccer matches, the event featured a lively and friendly netball game showcasing the skills of talented under-17 girls from Ward 37, representing S’eskhona and Inkanyamba Netball Clubs.

The festival formed part of a community-building initiative and was made possible with the help of ward allocation funding.

“The purpose of the programme is to encourage youth off the streets and away from alcohol and drugs, by providing and promoting the values of sport and fitness,” says ward 37 councillor Lionel Martin.

He said the sports carnival not only showcased athletic prowess, but also highlighted the power of community engagement and the positive impact it can have on the lives of the youth in Nyanga. Masithandane Football Club (FC) walked away with gold, while Jabula Brothers FC secured the silver as runners-up and Nyanga United claimed the bronze.
