The Gugulethu community is reeling after three men were gunned down at NY6 near the Gugulethu Mall on Sunday 22 January.
The shooting followed a similar incident in NY112 where three people were shot and killed on Saturday 15 January.
It is unclear what led to both shootings.
However, a 30 seconds video believed to be from the shooting scene and shared on social media on Monday 23 January, shows three men carrying firearms shooting at the blue vehicle. The driver stopped the car and tried to escape on his feet. However, he eventually fell next to the car under a hail of bullets. The assailants continued shooting inside the car, targeting other occupants.
A resident, who only identified himself as Mzondi for the fear of victimisation, said the incident occurred in the afternoon.
“I was inside the mall shopping when I heard several gunshots. We were all shocked inside the shop. We thought there was a robbery in one of the shops inside the mall. The security officer locked us inside the shop,” said Mzondi, adding that the door was opened a few minutes later. According to him, people who were at the mall informed security that the incident happened outside.

Mzondi said he immediately went outside to check the incident. “I saw a man lying on the ground covered with blood. The other two people were inside the car. I’m not sure where exactly they were shot because I was standing at a distance,” he explained.
Mzondi stated that mass shootings became a norm in Gugulethu. He urged the police to pull up their socks and to be visible in the community. “I don’t think it was a robbery. And I believe this incident is connected with the one that occurred in NY112. But I don’t want to speculate,” he said.
Provincial police spokesperson Brig Novela Potelwa said Gugulethu police have opened a triple murder docket for investigation after three men between the ages of 28 and 30 were shot and killed on Sunday evening.
“Reports from the scene indicate the vehicle in which the deceased persons were travelling in had just entered NY6 at approximately 17:50 when it came under fire from unknown gunmen who later fled in another vehicle. Numerous shots were fired at the vehicle wounding all occupants,” said Potelwa.
Two people died on the scene while a third died later in hospital, she confirmed.
Potelwa stated that the motive is yet to be determined. Provincial detectives are pursuing several leads, she added.
