Residents of Covid informal settlement were left reeling in shock after a man was found floating in a river in the area on Sunday 21 August.
The body of the unknown man is believed to be in his 30s.
The discovery was made by residents in the early morning.
Mfuleni police said an inquest docket has been opened.
A resident in her late 30s told City Vision she was passing the area when she saw police on the scene.
“When I went nearer to check what had happened, I noticed there was a man floating in the water. Not far from the man, there was a broken beer bottle,” she said.
The eye witness said the man had already died and police were waiting for the mortuary van to take the body away. “The most painful thing is that this man is not known in the area, and I am sure his family is waiting for him. It is very sad to witness such a thing,” said the resident.
Mfuleni spokesperson W/O November Filander confirmed the drowning incident.
“An inquest docket has been opened by the police after the discovery of a man in his 30s floating in the river. The unknown man is yet to be identified,” said Filander.
