The City of Cape Town is on a mission to improve road markings and reduce accidents in Ward 38.
City contractors are out in full force to give the roads a facelift after the project was temporarily stopped last year.
The project is expected to be finalised at the end of the month (February).
The project kicked off in December last year but came to a grinding halt after the contract employees were robbed of their belongings.
On Monday 30 January, workers returned to work to complete the job.
Ward 38 councillor Suzanne Zumana said the aim is to compel motorists to stick to the rules on the road. She stated that almost all the streets, including the speed humps in the ward, will be revamped.
“All the streets and speed humps in KTC, Hlazo Village and New Crossroads will be painted. We want to ensure that the roads are marked for motorists including pedestrians. We believe that this will minimise the road accidents as motorists will be able to see the road signs,” she explained.
Zumana appealed to the community to protect the workers. “Crime is taking over our areas. The community needs to reclaim its streets from criminals. The crime is delaying the provision of service delivery to our communities,” she said.
Pedestrian Lukhanyo Khanzi said the markings will not only assist motorists but also pedestrians.
He urged motorists to follow the road rules when driving in the townships. “The public transport drivers are bullies. They drive as they like in the townships but they obey the law when driving in town. Some of them don’t even stop at the stop signs when driving in our areas,” he said.
