A man and his girlfriend died in a shack fire at Kosovo informal settlement on Sunday 11 September.

At least three other shacks were damaged during the incident. The cause of the incident is still unknown.

One of the neighbours, who described himself as Mbatane, said the incident started at about 04:30 on Sunday.

He stated that the pair looked after the shack while the tenant was in the Eastern Cape.

“The person who stays in the shack is renting it. The shack owner is staying in Langa,” said Mbatane.

He added that the tenant left on Saturday 10 September for the Eastern Cape and asked the deceased man to look after the shack.

He stated that the female deceased was a visitor. “Unfortunately they both died in the shack fire. They burned beyond recognition. The family of the deceased woman recognised her weave which was left intact,” he explained.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse confirmed the incident. He said an emergency call was received at approximately 05:00, on Sunday 11 September.

“Crews from Gugulethu, Mitchell’s Plain and Epping were on scene. Several informal structures were destroyed and seven persons were displaced. The bodies of a man and woman were discovered among the debris. The fire was extinguished at 05:30 but the cause of the fire is unknown,” he said.
