Couple shot and killed at New Culture informal settlement in Khayelitsha

Residents from the New Culture informal settlement in Khayelitsha are devastated after a couple was shot and killed in their shack on Sunday 5 November.

The community is appealing for the deployment of more police officers in the area.

According to the residents, the incident occurred after 01:00.

When City Vision visited the area, the families of the deceased refused to speak to the media. They said they were not ready and requested to be given a space to grieve.

A community leader, who spoke anonymously, said they are very devastated by the incident. She described the shooting as a hit. “According to the information that we received from the nearby neighbours, they heard people kicking the door and a few minutes later heard gunshots. They were both shot in the head,” said the leader. 

She said it was the first time such an incident occurred in the area and the motive was unknown.

“We are planning to have a special meeting with the community and part of the agenda is this incident. Our aim is to intensify security in our area,”she explained.  

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said Lingelethu West officers are investigating two counts of murder following a shooting incident on Sunday morning in which a 37-year-old female and an unknown man were shot and fatally wounded.

“The officers attended to the crime scene in Mew Way, Khayelitsha and according to reports two unknown suspects knocked on the door of the victim’s house looking for someone and later they shot the couple. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Twigg.
