Defending champions UWC sent a resounding message to their title rivals with a devastating 10-0 victory over newcomers UNIVEN, highlighting a compelling second round of Varsity Women’s Football action at UJ Soweto Stadium on Saturday.
The comprehensive victory, featuring hat-tricks from captain Tiffany Kortjie and Chelsea Daniels, demonstrated UWC’s intent to retain their championship crown while establishing them as early tournament favorites.
UWC 0verwhelm debutants in goal fest

UWC’s title defense began in spectacular fashion as they dismantled UNIVEN with a commanding 10-0 victory that will be remembered as one of the most dominant performances in tournament history.
The defending champions exploded from the blocks, netting four goals within the opening 10 minutes. Captain Kortjie opened the floodgates just two minutes in, before Daniels, Faith Maswanganyi, and Thembelihle Zulu extended the advantage with clinical finishing.
UNIVEN head coach Carlo Negovha was forced into early damage control, substituting Sara Ramphabana for Ayanda Mabapa after just 12 minutes, but the changes failed to stem the tide.
The visitors’ defensive woes continued as goalkeeper Matete Makena conceded seven goals before being replaced by Nyeleti Mathebula, who immediately conceded upon entering the game.
Kortjie and Daniels each completed hat-tricks, while Akholiwe Matsotsi contributed a brace in what became a showcase of UWC’s attacking prowess and championship credentials.

UJ Maintain Perfect Start with Derby Victory

University of Johannesburg continued their impressive tournament start, securing a 2-0 victory over Wits in a fiercely contested Johannesburg derby to maintain their perfect record.
The “Orange Army” dominated possession throughout but were frustrated by outstanding goalkeeping from Wits’ Bridgette Moekwa, who produced a series of crucial saves to keep the first half scoreless.
UJ’s persistence was rewarded 16 minutes into the second half when Gugulethu Dlamini broke the deadlock with a spectacular strike into the top right corner, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack from midfield.
Thato Mofolo doubled the advantage in the 64th minute to seal the victory, though the match was marred by a head injury to Moekwa following a collision with UJ’s Sbongakonke Mzobe.
The victory gives UJ maximum points from their opening two fixtures and establishes them as serious contenders alongside defending champions UWC.

NWU Bounce Back with Crucial Victory

North-West University demonstrated their resilience, overcoming Friday’s heavy defeat to UJ with a spirited 2-1 victory against Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
NWU struck first in the 23rd minute when Nontobeko Gumede capitalized on a defensive error, finishing clinically after a misplaced CPUT pass deflected off Neo Montshosi.
CPUT’s response came through a moment of brilliance from Mosetsanagape Leepile, who leveled the scores with a stunning long-range effort in the 38th minute, exploiting a rare defensive lapse from NWU.
The winning goal arrived in the 54th minute through Tshiamo Gosiame Phiri, who converted smartly from a throw-in situation to secure NWU’s first points of the campaign.

Tshwane Derby Ends in Stalemate

The much-anticipated Tshwane derby between Tshwane University of Technology and UP-Tuks delivered drama but ended in a 1-1 draw after weather interruptions added to the spectacle.
TUT took an early lead through Mokgaetji Ramanna in the fifth minute, but their advantage lasted just two minutes before Lindiwe Nkambule’s unfortunate own goal restored parity.
The match was temporarily suspended due to lightning and adverse weather conditions, with both teams forced to retreat to the changing rooms before play could resume.
TUT were forced into a goalkeeper change in the second half after Retshepaone Ntwayagae suffered an injury in a collision with UP-Tuks’ Moeletsi Digoro, bringing Rebona Tshoma into the action.
Despite intense midfield battles and several near-misses – including Sivuyile Njobeni’s effort that struck the woodwork – neither side could find a winner in an evenly contested encounter.
