Khayelitsha police are investigating a case of double attempted murder after a shooting incident at the corner Swartklip and Japhta Masemola roads at Ikhwezi Park on Friday 2 September.
The incident, involving two off duty police officers, occurred at about 20:30. The two constables, aged 29 and 30, were shot and injured while on their way home, provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said.
“They were driving a marked police vehicle when their vehicle was shot at, at the traffic lights. Both members were injured and taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment,” he added.
Van Wyk appealed for public assistance in order to locate and arrest the culprits.
He stated that the police’s 72 hour Activation Plan has been launched. The plan, involving top police detectives, is designed to track and nab offenders within 72 hours. He added that the detectives are hard at work.
Khayelitsha Community Policing Forum secretary Phindile George condemned the attack on police. He called for a speedy and thorough investigation to ensure perpetrators were brought to book.
George said the attack on the officers is an attack on the state.
“We cannot allow our law enforcement members to be attacked regardless of being off duty. We need the officers not to leave any stone unturned and ensure that the perpetrators are in jail,” he said.
Anyone with information that could assist in expediting the investigation is urged to contact the police on 08600 10111 or via MySAPSApp.
