Four men were arrested and four others were on the run following the rape of a woman in Crossroads on Sunday 20 November.

The attack occurred at Makhandlela Crescent, where the victim rents a house.

Nyanga Police Station Vispol officer Capt Nasley Heynes said a rape case was opened and is under investigation.

According to Heynes, only three people were arrested.

“Three male suspects between the ages of 19 and 21 have been arrested,” said Heynes.

The incident sparked outrage from the community, with some residents appealing for the law to take its course.

Ward 36 councillor Nceba Ntshweza said the incident occurred on Sunday night. It is believed the suspects were dropped at the victim’s house by a Toyota Avanza.

“The victim was sleeping in her bedroom while her two children were sleeping in the dining room,” Ntshweza related.

He said the victim heard a car sound in front of the house.

While listening to the sound she heard a knock at the window, looked out and saw three men, and one of them was pointing a firearm at her.

They ordered her to open the door.

When she resisted they broke the glass. They threatened her with the gun and demanded she open the door.

This she did, fearing for her life, and it is alleged the men walked in and ransacked the shack before raping the victim.

Ntshweza said the victim believes the vehicle returned with another five men who also raped her.

“While they were busy raping her she said she could hear the car hooting outside. After they finished all three went out to the car. A few minutes later they came back with another five men, who also raped her.

After the culprits left, said Ntshweza, the victim stood up to check the car.

The next day she opened a case at Nyanga Police Station. On her way back from the station she decided to make a quick stop at Junction Mall. The move paid dividends.

“While she was walking around the mall she spotted one of the suspects,” Ntshweza said. She contacted a resident while keeping an eye on him. He said the resident arrived with other people.

“On their arrival, they saw the suspect crossing Govan Mbeki Road to Crossroads. They then informed the police.

“The police arrived and arrested suspects”.
