Cop unfurling police tape at crime scene

Nyanga residents are shattered after women were shot and killed at Sibini Avenue in Zwelitsha, on Wednesday evening 21 February.

According to the community, unknown men, wearing balaclavas, stormed the house around 18:20 and opened fire, killing the victims before they fled the scene. Three women died on the scene and the fourth died in the hospital.

The motive of the shooting is unknown.

A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment, said they were devastated by the incident. He described the culprits as cowards.

“It is a sad incident. The perpetrators knew what they were doing. They planned it,” he said, adding that a young child escaped through the back door during the incident.

He urged the community to stand up and fight against crime.

“It’s not the first time such an incident occurred in that house. In 2016, an 83-year-old woman was shot and killed while she was in the same house,” he said.

However, provincial police spokesperson Col Andre Traut said three people were killed. He added that detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes unit are probing the circumstances that led to the incident.

“Detectives

believed that the occupants of a Suzuki seven seater opened fire at the victims
in Sibini Avenue in Zwelisha at around 18:20. Two females both aged 43 were
shot and killed while an 18 year old male was caught in the crossfire and also
succumbed to death,” said Traut

Traut stated that the motive for the murder forms part of the police investigation. No one has been arrested yet.
