The Garden City Two project is underway as the City is busy installing the underground infrastructure.

The housing project in Ward 108 in Mfuleni started late in March, but it is not clear when it will be completed.

The project is an extension of the Garden City community.

Ward councillor Nkosiphendule Lombi stated that the project would offer fully serviced sites for beneficiaries.

“This is an old project. It started in 2018 for Phase One. Currently, we are busy with Phase Two. We are not going to build houses. We are going to give the beneficiaries fully serviced sites,” said Lombi.

He stated that there are more than 200 beneficiaries for the project, all from Garden City informal area.

Lombi said the first group of people is expected to be relocated this month. “The challenge about this project is that we had to move people into the open spaces within the area so that we can start installing underground infrastructure. After we have done that installation we will take them back to their serviced plots and move other groups of people to the open spaces in the area. It is a long process and will also depend on the cooperation with the community. That is why we are not sure about the timeframe of the project,” explained Lombi.

Explaining why the City took so long to complete the project, he said the City was waiting for land approval.

He stated that the project is under the City’s Department of Informal Settlement.

He urged the community to be patient and not hinder the project.
