Glen Grey FC from Site C became the Township Legends League champions 2021/22 after thrashing Monwabisi FC from Harare 5 – 0 on Saturday 26 March at Vuyiseka Sports Complex in Philippi.
They walked away with a trophy and gold medals.
Glen Grey finished the league with 93 points after 38 games.
Grey coach Khanyiso Swaphi described the season as “very tough”. He expressed his gratitude to the players for having a fighting spirit.
“We won it for the second time in a row. It wasn’t easy at all. But we had to ensure that we stay mentally and physically fit for the whole season,” said Swaphi, adding he had to juggle the squad as some of the players worked. He highlighted some of their challenges as lacking training facilities. “Our training grounds are poor. We are training on open fields. We share playing grounds with other leagues, which has a negative impact on the way our league is run,” he said, adding that their league started in March last year.
He described the Legend’s league as promoting a healthy living lifestyle.
“Most of the players that are playing in the league are over 35 years old. We are trying to encourage them to stay active and also promote football in our townships,” he explained.
