Young gospel artist from Khayelitsha, Athenkosi Gqweta, is appealing to the public to vote for him in the upcoming Bokone Bophirima Gospel Music Awards (BBGMA) to be held at Potchefstroom in the North West.
The awards are the brainchild of Dr Thapelo Donald Kgabage, youth influencer and accounting lecturer at the North West University (NWU).
They are designed to celebrate gospel artists in the North West and around the country. Voting for artists opened on Friday 29 July and will continue until Monday 31 October.
The awards ceremony will be on Saturday 26 November.
Gqweta, who is from H section, has been nominated in the Best National Gospel Newcomer for his latest Extended Play (EP) album titled Better 2022 which was released in April this year.
Gqweta described his nomination as a stepping stone into the future.
“The album took me by surprise as it has only been out four months. It’s the first time I enter the awards and winning this award will be a bonus for me,” he said, and urged his supporters to vote for him.
Gqweta has released two albums, his first titled Uyaphila. It was released in 2020.
Having composed most of his songs, Gqwetha described his music as gospel piano.
“Most of the time I write about my experiences and social issues. My music caters for everyone.
“I tried to blend it with amapiano to accommodate young people,” he stated.
He said people can get his EP to all digital platforms.
