Confusion reigns in Nyanga and in the provincial health sector following the discovery of hospital linen stashed in a shipping container.

The linen packed in plastic bags was discovered on Sunday 14 August near Cala Dairy. While the origin of the material remains a mystery the Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) is calling for a full scale investigation.

CPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe said such incidents damaged Nyanga’s reputation. He said there has been a surge in criminal activities in and around the Cape metro.

Qwebe suspected that the incident was well orchestrated. He said there were allegations that the linen was dumped by a hijacked vehicle. “These kind of incidents are worrying us because they put Nyanga on the map for all the wrong reasons. We are appealing to anyone who has information to report to the nearest police station,” said Qwebe.

Qwebe labelled car hijackings as one of the biggest challenges facing Nyanga.

Approached for a comment, provincial police spokesperson Sergt Wesley Twigg said the clothing was handed to the local police, however, no case was opened. “Please forward your enquiry to the Department of Health for comment,” said Twigg.

Provincial department of Health in Klipfontein and Monique Johnstone, Mitchell’s Plain Substructure principal communications officer, said the origin of the items is being investigated by the department and police to determine if they are indeed from any public hospital.
