Hundreds left homeless in Khayelitsha, Cape Town after a shack fire ravaged the area

Hundreds of shack dwellers are left homeless at SST informal settlement in Town Two, Khayelitsha after a shack fire ravaged that area on Sunday 29 October.

At least 152 shacks burned down and left 532 people stranded with only two fatalities.

Shack fire victim Nonkululeko Sondlo said she lost all her belongings in the shack fire. She said the shack fire started after 22:00. “I was working at night. I received a phone call from one of my neighbours informing me that there was a shack fire, and that my shack was already down. All my belongings, including my documents, burnt in it. I don’t know where I am going to sleep tonight.” Sondlo said she had been staying in the area for six years.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Charlotte Powell spokesperson said assessments had been completed and indicated that the number of people affected by the incident is 532 and 152 dwellings.”There have been two fatalities,” she said.

“Some affected persons are staying with friends and relatives while others will be accommodated at a local church in the area.”

Powell stated that the clearing of debris from the fire site will commence on Tuesday 31 October by specialised services within the City’s Solid Waste Department.
