Hard work paid off for members of Khuseleka Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) from Makhaza under Harare Police Station precinct in Khayelitsha after they were awarded a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ by the Harare Community Policing Forum on Wednesday 14 February. The group also received some of the working equipment donated by the City. The event, held at Desmond Tutu Community Hall in the area, attended by Harare police officers.

Harare CPF chair Funeka Soldaat described the event as a sign of showing love and appreciation to the team. She praised the group for doing a stunning job during the festive season last year.

“We felt there was a need to award them, to thank them for the great job they did in fighting crime during the December holidays,” she said. “They were able to restore peace in the community. We are trying to motivate them and other groups as well in our precinct.” Soldaat added there were 23 NHW groups in Harare.

She said this was the first time such an event was hosted in Harare, and they would be organised again.

Khuseleka NHW chair Lazola Somazembe said the award and equipment meant a lot, and the equipment would make their job easier. He praised his team for the great effort they put in. Somazembe also expressed gratitude to the City for the equipment donated to the Watch. However, he stated there was more that needed to be done in terms of curbing crime in the area.

“We are appealing to the youth to join the NHW to fight crime in our communities instead of sitting at home doing nothing.”

Harare police spokesperson W/O Nosiphiwo Mntengwane said police were celebrating the hard work shown by NHW members within their precinct.

She highlighted hijacking as one of the challenges of the area.
