In an attempt to strengthen safety and security in the community, Langa police station has appointed their new Vispol Commander.
Lt-Col Sakhiwo Dulungana commenced at the station on Tuesday 1 February from Brown’s Farm Police Station.
As a Vispol (Visible Policing) commander, Dulungana will be responsible for the operational efficacy of the Vispol members. The role also entails ensuring that the community gets the services they deserve.
In an interview with City Vision, he said his role will also be to enforce and tighten security in the community.
Dulungana added that he is willing to work with all the community stakeholders to fight crime. “My doors are open to anyone who is willing to work with the station to fight against crime in Langa. I invite all the community stakeholders to come forward to ensure that we build a strong unity against crime,” he said.
Dulungana, who has a vast experience in the police service, cited that joining the service was not a mistake. “I have 18 years in the police service. I started working at Clanwilliam in Cederberg in 2003 till 2008. In 2009 I relocated to Mitchell’s Plain Police Station. In 2011, I moved to Cape Town Police Station where I stayed till mid-2018. In 2018, I went to Nyanga Police Station where I became a station commander at Brown’s Farm station near Philippi Railway Station,” explained Dulungana, adding that he relocated to Mitchell’s Plain in order to be closer to school.
In 2010, he obtained BTech in policing at Unisa. He also studied LLB at Unisa. “I believe in education. I have a knowledge of what I’m doing. And besides that I have a lot of experience in this industry. I’ve worked at Nyanga Police Station, a station which is regarded as ‘murder capital’ in the country. When I arrived at Nyanga I revived CPF, neighbourhood watch and other stakeholders,” said Dulungana.
He cited alcohol abuse as the main challenge in Langa. “You’ll find that all the incidents that are happening in the community which include gender-based violence, domestic violence, common assault and crime, have something to do with alcohol. We will ensure that we keep an eye on all the liquor outlets,” he stated.
Working with the neighbourhood watch and the local community policing forum, Dulungana added that he plans to hold a community imbizo.
Langa Police Station spokesperson Capt Nondumiso Paul said the station is excited to have Dulungana as part of the team to fight crime in Langa.
“He has an advantage because he is coming from Nyanga which is a big cluster. We believe that he will share the experience that he gained while he was working at Nyanga with us. He will be able to mobilise the community and walk about,” said Paul.
