Lagunya showed on Saturday that they have the number of Northerns when they beat them in Elsies River the second time this year. The first time was in a league fixture of the City League and Saturday was in the Promotion League when they came out trumps by 32-22.

The Promotion League was shaken up on Saturday when the two contenders, Hamediehs and Van der Stel-Evergreens, were beaten by Masiphumelele and Sir Lowrians respectively. The outcome in Noordhoek was 29-25 in favour of Masiphumelele and Sir Lowrians beat Van der Stel-Evergreens by 43-42.

These results blew the competition wide open. The four contenders for the Top 9 title are Hamediehs, Van der Stel-Evergreens, Blakes and Violets.

Blakes, who had a bye on Saturday, attended the game between their neighbours VDE and Sir Lowrians to plot VDE’s demise this coming Saturday.

Northerns is still looking for their first win and is lying bottom of the log while Lagunya moved up to the middle of the log.

Violets overpowered Atlantis in Chukker Road in Lansdowne by 40-0 and made their intentions clear that none of the teams is certain of a place in the top four to qualify to play Super League C.

The two teams in position one and two on the log on Saturday 1 October are automatically promoted to Super League C, while teams in position three and four will compete in a play-off on a neutral ground to be the third team promoted to Super League C. The last three teams automatically drop to compete in the Southern, Northern and City League in 2023.

Hamediehs play against Violets on Saturday in Athlone and a tough battle is expected. In Stellenbosch Blakes and VDE will sort each other out and Northerns tackle Atlantis in Elsies River.

Masiphumelele will continue where they left off on Saturday when they travel to Nyanga for their encounter with Lagunya.
