An 18-year-old learner from Uxolo High School in Mandela Park, Khayelitsha, was over the moon after she became one of the top learners at the school.
Mpho Motsoari passed her matric with flying colours, obtaining six distinctions.
Motsoari achieved 96% in Mathematics, 92% in Physical Science, 93% in Life Orientation, 81% in Life Science, 83% in English, 83% in Geography and 75% in Sesotho.
While impressive, Motsoari was not impressed with her performance, stating she expected better marks.
“I’m so disappointed with my results. I was expecting 100% for Maths. For other subjects, I was expecting not less than 95% minimum. I’m not happy at all,” she explained, citing that she knew that she would pass matric.
Despite this, she looks forward to continuing her studies as the first in her family to attend university.
Motsoari, who lives in Black Heath, will study Actuarial Science at Wits University in Gauteng.
“I’m planning to leave the province on Sunday 28 January to go to varsity. I’m already accepted.
“The classes are expected to start early next month,” she said.
She highlighted hard work, persistence and discipline as her secrets to success.
Motsoari said she worked hard to be where she is today.
“I was attending extra classes and the Kutlwanong Programme which was conducted at Luhlaza High School on weekends. The programme was specialising in teaching maths and physical science.”
She advised other learners, especially the class of 2024, to be disciplined and listen to their teachers.
