The
fourth suspect in connection to the killing of a former activist Loyiso
Mabandla was arrested on Monday 27 November in Cofimvaba, Eastern Cape. The
41-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the East London Magistrates’ Court
on 28 November, after which he will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on
1 December, when he will join his co-accused, Mziyanda Mdlungu.

“The
Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, on 27 November, swiftly
arrested a 41-year-old suspect who was sought in connection with Mr Mabandla’s
murder,” said the provincial Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Siyabulela Vukubi. “The
suspect was traced and apprehended in Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape where he
was appearing in court for an unrelated matter.”

He
said the incident from which the suspect’s arrest emanates occurred on 17 April
2023, when Mabandla was killed in a hail of bullets at the Philippi Railway
Station. Vukubi said it is believed Mabandla was targeted for his role in talks
to clear Metrorail’s Central Line, where families had constructed their homes.

“The
Hawks have since arrested Zukisa Tshabile (38), Mziyanda Mdlungu (38) and
Thobani Maxengana (39) for the murder of Mabandla. Maxengana died in detention.”

The
Provincial Head of the Hawks in the Western Cape, Major-General Mathipa
Makgato, praised the members for the job well done in ensuring all the alleged
perpetrators were brought to book, in the hope that justice would prevail.
