Residents from Phase 1 in Lusaka, Nyanga were shocked to discover the body of an unknown an at the NY5 Gugulethu Cemetery on Friday 15 December.
The deceased was discovered by some of the residents residing opposite the cemetery in Lusaka.
Residents suspect that the deceased was robbed and killed in the early hours on Friday.
One of the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, said the deceased was hacked in the head.
“It looked as if he was killed with a sharp object. We suspect he was robbed.”
She described the cemetery as dangerous, particularly at night.
The resident said most people who become victims are those who walk at night under the influence of alcohol. She appealed to the community to resist going into the cemetery at night.
“The problem here is that criminals have vandalised the cemetery yard. They stole the palisade fence and sold it to a scrapyard. Even some of the graves are vandalised as well. The City needs to do something and re-fence the cemetery so people can stop passing through here.”
Provincial police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi said Gugulethu officers responded to a complaint on their arrival at the local cemetery in NY5 they found the body of a man who had sustained stab wounds to the head.
“The 30-year-old man was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,” he related. “The unknown suspects fled the scene and have yet to be arrested.”
According to Swartbooi the motive for the incident forms part of a police investigation. He said a murder case had been opened for investigation.
