An unknown man was shot and killed in Philippi while he allegedly tried to hijack a car on Friday 23 February.
The incident occurred at New Eisleben Road, a few metres away from The Junxion Mall.
Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) secretary Dumisani Qwebe described the incident as uncalled for.
He said there was a bit of a traffic chaos when the deceased attempted to hijack the vehicle.
“I was in that vicinity when the incident happened. I heard two gunshots and I hurriedly went to see myself.
“On my arrival on the scene, the man was lying on the road,” explained Qwebe, adding that the deceased was shot in the head.
He said according to witnesses, the deceased tried to hijack a car without any weapon.
“It seems the deceased was known by the local taxi drivers (amaphela). I’ve heard one of them saying he told him (deceased) to stop what he was doing because he will die one day.
“I phoned the Nyanga officers immediately while on the scene. I realised that there were people who wanted to attack the [vehicle owner],” he said.
Qwebe stated that crime is getting out of hand in the area.
He urged the government to deploy more officers in the Nyanga precinct.
“Carjacking, murder and gender-based violence are some of the cases dominating in the precinct.
Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk confirmed the incident.
However, he stated that no arrest has been made as yet.
“A case of murder was opened for investigation at Nyanga police station. The deceased is 28 years old,” said Van Wyk.
