The Gugulethu
Development Forum (GDF) has criticised the killing of five people in KTC
yesterday (25 September) evening.
The victims were
reportedly sitting in two separate vehicles on Fenqe Street when a group of men
travelling in a minibus taxi opened fire on them and fled the scene.
Provincial police
spokesperson Brig Novela Potelwa says police received a call on Monday evening.
Upon their arrival, she says they discovered the bodies of five men with
gunshot wounds inside two vehicles.
“Reports at the disposal of police indicate
that the victims were sitting inside two vehicles when another vehicle with
armed men emerged and shots were fired at the occupants of the two vehicles.
Five men between the ages of 46 and 52 were subsequently killed,” adds Potelwa.
The incident is the
third in less than a week in the Gugulethu Policing Precinct. On Friday 22
September, two people were gunned down at the corner of NY43 and NY44 in
Gugulethu. The next day, a man who sells amagwinya along Klipfontein Road near
Gugulethu Cemetery, was also shot and killed.
GDG secretary Vincent Domingo says the killings
are alarming. He appeals to the government to deploy more officers.
“In
Gugulethu, we have a shortage of police vans and manpower. A station like
Gugulethu is supposed to have sufficient resources and staff members, but we
don’t see that. We have made calls to the provincial and national offices, but
our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” says Domingo.
