A forensic vehicle waits to take the body of a child away while a police officer takes the notes from the crime scene.


Mfuleni residents are shocked after the body of a child was discovered stuffed in a plastic bag along Nqubelani Street near Eziflethini area on Thursday 27 October.

According to the residents, the body was found by a general worker who was collecting the rubbish.

They said the infant’s body had bruises.

No arrest has been made yet regarding the incident.

Community leader Mzoli Matutu described the incident as appalling. He stated that it is not the first time a similar incident happened in the area.

“It is the second time now. A similar incident occurred in 2019 where the body of a child was found dumped in the rubbish,” he said.

He urged the community to work together with the police to find the culprit.

“We left everything in the hands of the police to investigate the matter. This is devastating and whoever did that deserves to be arrested,” he said.

Mfuleni Police Station spokesperson W/O November Filander confirmed the incident. He said an inquest docket has been opened.

“On Thursday morning around 08:00 a female Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) worker was busy collecting garbage bags near Nqubelani Str, Mfuleni, when she discovered the lifeless body of an eight-month-old female infant inside a plastic bag next to the road. Ambulance services and police were called to the crime scene,” said Filander.

He stated that no one has been arrested so far.
