Khayelitsha police are investigating a murder case after a popular tavern owner was gunned down in front of his house at L section in Site B on Monday 13 May.
Khayelitsha police spokesperson Capt Asanda Daweti confirmed the incident. She added that after the officers were alerted to the incident at 19:30, they went to the scene. On arrival, they found the deceased at Bemye Street with several gun wounds in the face and head.
“According to the report we received, Busang Lebata Mona (39) a well-known tavern owner of Mona’s Tavern in Site B, was coming from his tavern going home when the incident happened.
“It is alleged a group of unknown men accosted and shot him several times and fled the scene,” said Daweti, adding that he was declared dead on the scene.
No arrests have been made yet and police are investigating, she added.
A Site B Community Policing Forum (CPF) member, who didn’t want to be known for fear of harassment, said they were disturbed by the incident.
He described the deceased as a well-mannered person in the community. He said Site B is becoming a no-go area.
“Crime is high in Site B. Today (Tuesday 14 May) street cleaners were robbed of their phones by thieves with knives. People are killed every week here. We are not safe. Even CPF members are not safe because some people see us as snitches,” he explained. He stated that the crime in the black communities is abnormal.
