Harare Police Station is on sixth spot in the top 30 stations in the country, on murder cases reported in the first three months of this year.
It is third highest in the Western Cape just below Kraaifontein and Delft.
This was revealed during the recent release of quarterly statistics by Minister of Police, Bheki Cele on Friday 3 June.
Harare recorded 58 murders, with a difference of 23 cases as compared to the same period last year.
These revelations have sent shock waves to the Harare Community Policing Forum (CPF).
Delft is in position two in the province, on 63 cases with a difference of 25 while Kraaifontein leads the province on position one with 67 cases with a difference of 43 during the same period as last year.
Cele, during the release of these stats, said the quarterly figures were used as a management tool to guide the operational plans of the police.
He said the statistics are not just only to quantify crime or create debate in society.
Cele said the figures served as a call of action for government, business, NGOs, civil society and communities to come on board in the fight against crime.
On rape Harare is on position seven in the country with 49 cases, a difference of 176 cases during the same period last year.
Delft is on position two in the country with 72 cases with a difference of 31 during the same period last year.
Harare CPF chair Funeka Soldaat said crime in the area has really shocked them.
She said they had hope not to see such stats after having a temporarily station in Makhaza. “It means there’s still a lot that needs to be done by CPF in the community and as well as police to ensure work is done. We need to ensure that the work is done effectively as the stats showed a grim picture,” she said.
