Hundreds of children from Lwandle gathered at the Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum in the area during the Fun Day event it organised on Sunday 1 October.
The aim was to raise funds for the facility.
The museum manager Maso Soko described the event as part of taking the children away from the streets.
“Since Covid-19 things have changed,” she said. “We lost funds. We had to retrench some of our staff members because we couldn’t pay them.
“The concept of fundraising came after we noticed we were struggling to survive.”
Soko said the museum had various projects it was pursuing to keep the facility operating, including karaoke, a game night, fun day, to name a few.
She said she was impressed by the positive response shown by the community, adding that the museum used to do events but never had that many people attending it.
“We are doing a Fund Day twice a year, in March and September. Normally when we did them we had about 80 children attending.
“But last Sunday we had more than 160 children, aged 3 to 14 years old, some accompanied by their parents. The atmosphere was great and the weather nice.”
One parent Sindiswa Nkanyamba praised the museum for the great initiative, adding that it was truly an eye-opener for some.
“It was great for our children,” she said. “They really enjoyed playing on the jumping castle and water slides. Some of them had never been to the beach so they really enjoyed the vibe. And we like that because it was safer than being at the beach.”
