Nyanda Avenue residents in Makhaza are ecstatic after the City of Cape Town began workto fix the stormwater drains that troubled motorists and the community for several weeks.
Residents say the road has been closed for three weeks while municipal workers tried to fix the problem.
Resident Makuliwe Ntozini (71) said they are relieved that the street has been attended to. He said the street had a burst drain and potholes that caused the problem.
“It was not long ago. The street was fixed by the City but it didn’t stay long and was damaged again. There were a lot of potholes here,” explained Ntozini.
He lambasted the company that was initially hired to fix the road for doing shoddy work. He believes the old underground infrastructure caused all their problems.
Ward 96 councillor Lucky Mbiza stated that there was a problem with drains in the area. He said the City changed the underground infrastructure for the stormwater drains to function well.
“This is the third week now that Nyanda Avenue has closed. The City is fixing the stormwater drains in that area and changing some of the underground infrastructure as well,” explained Mbiza.
He stated that the road was fixed in the middle of 2022 but was damaged again last year. He stated that he was unsure when it would be completed and urged residents and motorists to be patient.
