Nyanga Police Station is in the limelight for good reason this time after the acting station commander Col Wynand Muller won a Visible Policing Employee of the Year award during the Western Cape Excellence Awards 2025 which were held at Century City on Saturday 17 January. Muller said he is so ecstatic about the awards. He stated that the hard work paid off.
“Within the short period I was stationed at Nyanga police station I won the awards twice. I won it in 2024 and again in 2025. I’m so happy because it shows that there is something that we are doing right at the station,” said Muller.
He attributed his success to teamwork. He praised the community stakeholders for playing a huge part in alleviating crime in the area.
Muller described Nyanga as one of the most vibrant communities. He said with their strategic planning they can fight crime.
“We do the basics. We make sure that there is police visibility. We conduct roadblocks and stop and search operations. We also do awareness campaigns where we distribute pamphlets with relevant information. Sometimes we conduct imbizos where we interact with the communities and listen to their problems and try to find ways to resolve them,” he explained.
Muller mentioned murder, carjacking, robberies, gender-based violence (GBV) and domestic violence as some of the most reported cases. He urged the community to also report extortion related incidents.
“We have a problem with extortion that is dominating our communities. In most cases it affects local businesses, especially foreign owned businesses. But it is difficult to investigate the cases because no one is coming forward. People fear for their lives,” said Muller, adding that illegal shebeens is another problem.
He advised the junior officers to empower themselves and study further. He said being a police officer is not just a job, but a calling.
