Irate KTC SANCO members are calling for the City of Cape Town to impose stringent penalties against people who illegally dump rubbish. The remarks came after the civic organisation together with other Ward 38 community stakeholders planted trees at an illegal dumping site outside Masincedane Clinic in the vicinity on Tuesday 14 November.
The aim was to stop illegal dumping in the area. (“Nyanga community plants ten trees”, City Vision, 16 November).
KTC SANCO secretary Lumkile Msila lambasted the community accusing residents of not having manners. He said they turned the area into a pigsty.
“People who are illegally dumping rubbish are from the formal areas. We’ve seen some of them coming from Moonlight (area) pulling bins full of rubbish to dump them there while we were busy planting trees. We don’t know why people are doing such a thing because the wheelie bins are collected every Wednesday,” said Msila, adding that they saw the rubbish the following day.
He said the City installed a board denouncing littering but people still discard rubbish on the site.
Msila urged the people to be the eyes and ears of the community. He said the culprits deserve to rot in jail.
“All the City is doing is to promote nature conservation. It wants people to see the importance of having trees in our communities,” said Msila.
Ward 38 councillor Suzanne Zumana said it is disappointing to see people messing up with developments and services in the area.
“It is everyone’s business to keep this ward clean and safe from criminals. We need to work together in order to improve and develop our area,” said Zumana. She declared that KTC is not a jungle.
