Our townships are becoming Sodom and Gomorrah, people are killed and raped daily.
Many of our communities have been tainted because of the scandals that engulfed them.
No one wants to stay or be associated with those areas. Those who stay in them do so because they have no other choice. People survive through God’s grace.
Gugulethu, which is one of the oldest townships in Cape Town, is trying hard to turn the tide and rebuild its image.
The area is doing many positive things to rebuild its image.
Last year in September, Gugs made headlines by unveiling a logo to boost tourism and place the area on the global map.
As if that was not enough, last week, on Friday 3 May, the community unveiled the Gugulethu monument. The plague commemorates and celebrates the roles played by former leaders in all sectors of the communities during the struggle.
The monument will be erected at the corner of Klipfontein (NY108) and Steve Biko (NY1) roads.
Dr Mzwandile Plaatjie, who spearheaded the project, said it is time for the people of Gugulethu to write their history and not wait for someone from another area.
He encouraged the community to play an active role in the betterment of the neighbourhood. Plaatjie added that they intend to erect a hub that will store all the area’s history for the next generation to read.
At face value, the project can look stupid to someone hungry and unemployed. If one looks beyond that and tries to understand the concept, it is quite informative. It shows that even though a lot of things have happened in the area, there are also good stories to tell.
Gugulethu used to be known for positive things.
One of the popular places was Mzoli’s. The eatery was known nationwide.
Now Gugulethu has lost all the spark because of all the horrible things that are happening.
We need community leaders who have a vision for a better future. We need people who can lead from the front during difficult times.
Let’s not allow hooligans to harass and dictate our streets. We might be looking as if we are failing to match them (hooligans) toe to toe, we need to use our superior logic.
