Members of the Gugulethu Community Policing Forum are saddened by the gruesome killing of an 85-year-old woman at NY 132.

Charlotte Madolo’s body was found at her house in Gugulethu on Saturday 19 February. She had a scar over her left eye and the right eye was gouged out.

Gugulethu CPF secretary Nokwanda Mkongi said the incident has left the community traumatised and heartbroken.

The CPF is now pleading with the law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and bring the perpetrator to the book.

Mkongi claimed the perpetrator jumped over the wall from the back of the house. “The incident happened during the day. The grandma was alone in the house and other members of the family were attending a funeral in the vicinity. The deceased was found by her grandchild then she went to inform her parents at the funeral,” said Mkongi.

She described the increasing gender-based violence (GBV) in the area as alarming. She urged the community to work closely with the police to curb crime in Gugulethu.

“As CPF we intend to establish a stakeholder forum that will work closer with us dealing with the challenges of senior citizens. We want to ensure that all the elders are protected,” she stated.

Gugulethu Police Station spokesperson Sgt Sindisiwe Ngqele said a murder case has been opened. She said the deceased was found tied to the bed , her face covered with a pillow case. She said her right eye had a big wound.

“It was reported that the grandma was alone during this incident and her children were attending a funeral in the area. A 46-year-old man was arrested and appeared in court on Tuesday 22 February,” said Ngqele.
