Political organisations should really be ashamed of themselves. Most importantly, they must stop pretending as though they represent the poor people. They must come clean and tell us who they stand for or whether they support certain individuals within our communities.

I have attended many cases and marches of the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and others (LGBTQIA+) community and I have never seen any political leader standing with them. They don’t have to wear their political regalia, but I believe their presence would have a huge impact in addressing some of the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. The reality is that political organisations make the LGBTQIA+ community voting cows. They only care about them when they need their votes after that they are on their own.

The LGBTQIA+ community is one sector of society that is facing a lot of challenges. They are despised for nothing. Some of them are even disowned by their families because of their sexual orientation. Our political leaders are quiet, not a single leader wants to associate with them.

Where is this rainbow nation that was seen by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu if there are people who are marginalised in some sections of our society?

Listening to them sharing their experiences and the pain inflicted by their brothers, one wonders where this country is going. Their sin is to be in a same-sex relationship.

Why are our political leaders so quiet about this? Is it because there is no money for them to get?

We have seen our political leaders supporting criminals in courts. They support people who have been accused of stealing money, accused of rape and who have been accused of killing. Why is it so difficult for them to support innocent people?

I never heard of a lesbian or gay person robbing or raping another person.

It’s us, straight people, who commit such crimes. All the community stakeholders who are masquerading as fighting crime are nowhere to be seen. We have ward councillors who pretend to work or represent people but not a single councillor was ever part of their marches. Councillors only care about the projects in their wards to ensure they benefit instead of assisting the vulnerable.

Their parents fail to protect them. Instead, they are concerned about what the community or church members will say.

The government needs to implement stringent laws against the perpetrators. The leaders need to support everyone regardless of their sexual orientation, not only those affiliated with their political parties.
