A group of Grade 12 learners from Nomzamo High School is thrilled to be part of Somerset College’s Saturday programme.

While some learners took time to adjust and find their feet at the start of the new academic year, Nomzamo learners hit the ground running by starting their Saturday classes on 29 January.

The classes are designed to help learners achieve good marks in Maths, Physics, English and Life Sciences.

It is hoped the move will significantly boost the school’s academic performance. During the recently announced National Senior Certificate results the school obtained 66,4%.

The school has had a relationship with the college, as their teachers have over the years offered tutoring at the school on weekends.

According to school principal Chris Mgubanto, the school has had a long relationship with the college.

He told City Vision they were happy to take further steps in cementing their relationship with the college.

Mgubanto believes the extra classes will help their learners to focus more as they will also have stationery and advanced scientific calculators.

“More importantly, this programme will not only be focussing on academic work but life skills as well. We know not all learners will follow the academic route, but this programme will assist them to be better individuals,” he said.

Mgubanto said they also have plans to expand the programme to accommodate Grade 10 and 11 learners.

“As the school we are very excited to be part of this programme which will see our learners develop further. As a community-based school, it is fulfilling to see our learners have opportunities to change their lives,” he said.

“Our mission is almost accomplished, and we are very happy,” said Mgubanto.

Learner Iviwe Maga (17) said her science and maths marks in Grade 11 showed a significant drop. She believes by being part of the programme that will be something of the past.

“I am very excited to be part of this group that has received this opportunity. I strongly believe this programme will bring positive results at the end of this year,” she said.

Maga said the teachers at the college had made it easier for them to understand the complicated subjects.

Banoyolo Gana (16) from Lwandle said: “This programme will help us in terms of empowering us with more knowledge in addition to what we already learn from the school.

“I believe it will also help me by increasing my marks as they have an easier way for us to understand these challenging subjects.”
