A new primary school in Lwandle, valued at R65 million, is expected to be open early next year if everything goes according to plan.

The construction of the primary school started in February this year.

Ward 86 councillor Xolani Diniso said they want to make education fashionable in the area. He said the aim is to ensure no child roams the streets.

“The contractor started mid-last year levelling the ground and putting underground infrastructure before the construction started early this year. The primary school doesn’t have a name yet. At the moment, it is called Lwandle Primary Project. The government is still going to name it,” he explained.

Diniso explained that the school would be built in phases and was due to be completed by December.

“We are expecting the school to be operating by next January. The school will have 36 classrooms excluding staff rooms, the principal’s office, etc.

“They will build eight classes in phase one. In phase two, they will build 11 classes and in phase three they will build 17 classes,” said Diniso.

The school will be the seventh primary school in the area.

Kerry Mauchline, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department, confirmed that the school would open at the start of the 2024 academic year.

However, she said the school has 30 classrooms. “The first phase will have eight classrooms, but once all phases are completed, the school will have 30 classrooms. The current name of the project is Lwandle Primary School. However, the final name of the school will be determined by the education district in consultation with local stakeholders,” said Mauchline.
