Rainbow Soccer Tournament in Philippi is expected to kick-off on Friday 21 January and be finished on Saturday 6 February.

The fourth annual tournament is going to be held at Vuyiseka Sport Complex in Philippi East. At least 32 teams from Philippi and surrounding areas are expected to be participating in the tournament. The event organiser Zane Mapete described the pre-season tournament as a platform for unknown players to showcase their talent.

“We started the tournament in 2019,” he said. “It’s going to be a fourth year now and all these years we ran it smoothly. It’s a pre-season tournament that we organise to prepare our players for the beginning of the season.” Mapete said the joining fee is R1 200.

He stated that the tournament is formulated in different ways as there are six teams that are going to be paid.

“The champions walk away with R11 000 cash, trophy and gold medals,” Mapete pointed out. “Second price R5 500. There is a Plate Section where teams on 3rd and 4thpositions are playing together. The winner for Plate Section takes away R4 500 and runners-up R3 000. And there is Shield Section, which comprises teams on fifth and sixth positions and the winner goes away with R2 500 and runner-up R2 000.”

He described the tournament as well-known in the metro. “We invited teams from Mitchells Plain, Kraaifontein, Nyanga, Crossroads, Mfuleni, Dunoon, Atlantis, Samora, Delft, Khayelitsha and Philippi. And we believe the standard is going to improve compared to previous tournaments.” Mapete urged the supporters to come in their numbers to the stadium to witness great football.
