Residents in Old Crossroads are shaken after three people, including a law enforcement officer, were killed at Sonwabile Drive on Thursday 18 May.
Provincial police spokesperson Capt André Traut confirmed the victims were all sitting in a car in front of the law enforcement officer’s house when the incident occurred.
Traut added Nyanga police responded to a murder scene at 14:15, where the bodies of three men, suspected to be in their thirties, were discovered.
According to the information from the scene, one of the victims came to visit his two friends and while they were sitting inside his VW Polo unknown suspects opened fire at them and fatally wounded all three.
“The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be apprehended.
The motive for the triple murder is yet to be established,” he said.
Meanwhile, ward 36 councillor Nceba Ntshweza described the incident as traumatic.
He said according to the information that he received, the suspects emerged from another car to shoot the three men.
“The culprits were driving an Avanza. They stopped at another street called Ntokozweni. The two guys came out and went to the deceased car and on their arrival, they opened fire. They first shot the two people who were sitting in the front seats. And later shot the officer who was sitting at the back seat,” said Ntshweza, adding that they suspect that the culprits were targeting the other two men, because they were not from the area.
He said the officer was in uniform on his way to work.
Ntshweza stated that it is not the first time incident like that has happened in the area.
“There were two other similar incidents that occurred last year where people were ambushed while sitting in a car. And we are becoming concerned because we do not know the motive behind these incidents. But we are appealing to the police not to leave any stone unturned,” said Ntshweza.
Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident are asking the public to call Crime Stop on 0860010111 with information.
